“Soka Gakkai” means “Society for the Creation of Value”. The SGI is an international lay organisation of Buddhists following the teachings of Nichiren Daishonin. It has some 12 million members in 190 countries and territories.
There are two aspects to the SGI. The first is its support of the Buddhist practice of its members. The spreading of Buddhism, teaching those who are interested, is the responsibility of individual Buddhists.
The second aspect of the SGI is its relationship with society. The SGI does not directly promote Buddhism as a public organisation, but seeks to transmit its spirit through education, cultural exchange and activities in support of peace, such as educational campaigns about the threat of nuclear weapons. As an Non-Governmental Organisation of the United Nations, it supports the UN and UNHCR (UN High Commission for Refugees).
