The simplest way to work out whether Nichiren Daishonin’s Buddhism is for you is to try it out. Buddhism is intensely practical –- so if you don’t benefit from practice, there’s no point in continuing!

We encourage you to try Buddhism wholeheartedly for at least three months, following the guidelines below, to get a proper feel for the practice. The best way to do this is with support from a friend, or other Buddhists, who will very happy to assist.

Three aspects to daily practice


cheerful-in-ct.jpgChant Nam-myoho-renge-kyo twice a day, for at least five minutes morning and evening (but as much as you like).

Face a blank wall (to avoid distractions), and maintain an alert posture.

Chant Nam-myoho-renge-kyo clearly and rhythmically. (Each syllable of Nam-myoho-renge-kyo is chanted as a single beat; get help to check your pronunciation.) Chant with gratitude for your life just as it is, and with absolute determination to realise all your goals.

Chant to your heart’s content.

What to chant for: Chant for the happiness of yourself and those around you. If you wish to chant for specific material benefits, that’s fine; but do so with the attitude that you yourself will make your prayers come true. An attitude of optimistic determination in chanting is best.


Daily study is absolutely vital to Buddhism. Start reading up to find out more. Ask questions, or keep a list of questions for when you meet someone you can ask. Feel free to email us with questions. There are no taboos, so ask anything you like.


Practising for others: If you can, attend Buddhist meetings regularly, with a spirit of wanting to contribute in any way possible.
